Today was bookbinding day for Sarabande Writing Labs Volume 2, The Field of Me. This collection contains poems written during SWL's recent workshop series at Hotel Louisville, a transitional program for homeless women in drug and alcohol recovery.
The collection's title, The Field of Me, is a line borrowed from David Tomas Martinez's poem "Scientifically Speaking," which became a kind of motto for this session. "There have been exciting discoveries in the field of me... " reads the poem. The women who participated in the workshop used poetry to discover and express their stories, to experiment with their fields of vision through erasure poems, to imagine themselves as fields full of birds, children, thistles, or sunflowers.
On Friday, we'll be celebrating these women and their poems with a community reading at Hotel Louisville. Our featured reader, David Tomas Martinez, will be joined onstage by Sarabande Writing Labs participants, reading their poems. All poetry lovers are welcome—please come celebrate with us!
(Thanks again to Hound Dog Press for designing and printing these great covers, and a special shout out to Theresa Noll, volunteer extraordinaire, who lent us a hand today! )
