Each Friday we post one new writing prompt created by a Sarabande author. Prompts like this one are included in our online Reader's Guides along with discussion questions and suggested reading to accompany each title. So if you can't wait a week for the next prompt, visit our Reader's Guide page to find them all in one place!
This week's prompt comes from Patty Crane, translator of Bright Scythe.
THE SOUND MIRROR
Find a poem written in a foreign language that you don’t understand. If it’s accompanied by an English translation, don’t read that just yet. Read the foreign poem several times, aloud, using your imagination to sound out the words and rhythm until they begin to evoke for you some kind of meaning or sense. Now write a poem which, line by line, mirrors that rhythm and sense. Then you can read the translation of the poem to see where that might take you.
