BRIAN LEUNG ON SARABANDE + NEA

"IT’S NO HYPERBOLE TO SUGGEST THAT WITHOUT THE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN SARABANDE AND THE NEA I WOULDN’T BE AN ASIAN AMERICAN LITERARY AWARD RECIPIENT, A WILLA AWARD RECIPIENT, A LAMBDA LITERARY AWARD MID-CAREER NOVELIST RECIPIENT.”—Brian Leung

For more than twenty years Sarabande has received generous funding from the National Endowment for the Arts in support of our publishing and educational programming. Each year, a handful of our titles receive special, earmarked funding from the NEA. In 2004, World Famous Love Acts was one of those titles. Here's author Brian Leung on publishing with Sarabande:

"I serve as Purdue University’s Director of Creative Writing today, and if I might add humbly, am a respected fiction writer, precisely because Sarabande took the risk of publishing my first book a dozen years ago. Indeed, Sarabande’s publication of World Famous Love Acts opened doorways to foundational university teaching opportunities, securing an agent, and finding further publication with major presses. I’m one of dozens upon dozens of writers who have a never-ending debt to this fine press and its ongoing efforts to support new and established writers. I know, too, that Sarabande’s trust in my fiction was backed up by funding from the NEA. It’s no hyperbole to suggest that without the partnership between Sarabande and the NEA I wouldn’t be an Asian American Literary Award recipient, a Willa Award recipient, a Lambda Literary Award Mid-Career Novelist recipient, nor, to say the least, Sarabande’s own Mary McCarthy Award recipient."
