"I worry about the next generation of writers. Without the NEA, where will they turn?" —Matthew Neill Null
For more than twenty years Sarabande has received generous funding from the National Endowment for the Arts in support of our publishing and educational programming. Each year, a handful of our titles receive special, earmarked funding from the NEA. In 2016, Allegheny Front was one of those titles. Here's author Matthew Neill Null on publishing with Sarabande:
"I write about working people in West Virginia. Theirs is an American story, yet in terms of representation, they’re so often maligned, overlooked, or ignored. In my small way I’ve tried to challenge this, and I couldn’t have done it without the National Endowment for the Arts and the brave publishing houses like Sarabande that the NEA supports. My work falls outside the zeitgeist—without Sarabande, Allegheny Front would never have made its way into the big, busy world. I worry about the next generation of writers. Without the NEA, where will they turn? The story of places like West Virginia will go unwritten. Will be lost forever. When we lose our sense of our history, America suffers."
