Growing Up Alone
by Melinda B.

It was like
being in a desert
no one else around
wind blowing sand

No it wasn't

It was like
drifting alone on a canoe
far away
into the sunset

No it wasn't

It was
having family
feelings
hugs touches
people who cared

But I was still alone

Audio Post: SWL Poet Reads "It's Perfect"

Listen in to Sarabande Writing Labs poet Lottie reading her poem "It's Perfect," written during our six-week poetry-writing workshop at Hotel Louisville, a recovery facility and homeless shelter. We think you'll agree it's pretty perfect.

IT'S PERFECT
by Lottie J.

My hair is gray
It shines like day

Maximum softness does not require
so much care
It's pure
It sparkles
so find out more

It's like the spring, summer
the barest, the boldest

Feel the evening oils
the rich and healthy skin
no progress would be possible
without

It's perfect

Audio Post: SWL Poet Reads "Bodies"

Listen in as Sarabande Writing Labs alum Kamica reads her poem "Bodies" at a free community reading held at Hotel Louisville, a homeless shelter. Kamica wrote "Bodies" during a Sarabande Writing Labs workshop at Hotel Louisville and took her inspiration from the poem "Forgetting Willie James Jones," by David Tomas Martinez.

BODIES
by Kamica F.

Bodies are things we find in the dirt.

Some are put there by families,
and others are put there to hide.

Whether by natural causes or not
we all end up there anyway.

Hopefully we all get to see
the heavens someday.
