Sarabande Writing Labs instructor featured in Telegraph, UK

Sarabande Writing Labs instructor Sarah Ivens speaks to the healing power of writing in The Telegraph. Ivens taught a

"When I couldn’t articulate my grief to my family, and I sat mute to the concerns of my husband, pen and paper became my tools of communication."

For Ivens, writing about loss became a larger conversation. Ivens found that not only words, but also the process of writing can be shared. In Louisville and in London, Ivens led workshops for grieving mothers through Sarabande Writing Labs. Together, women discussed and wrote through their experiences of grief. As Ivens says in The Telegraph, the workshop experience is "a start towards healing, after the worst pain imaginable. "

We're grateful for today's Courier-Journal coverage of Sarabande Writing Labs and words from alumni Amy Elzy and Diane Cruz.

Early this spring Amy and Diane participated in a special Sarabande Writing Labs series for grieving mothers led by Sarah Ivens. Ivens' writing sessions offered women a space of understanding in which to share their grief. As Diane states in the article, "writing for me has always been a way to express myself, especially at the darkest moments or the deepest pain."

We are amazed by how community builds through writing, especially for mothers dealing with an often isolating and little-discussed pain. In the article, Amy says of the workshop, "Having that connection locally gives you that peace that you're not alone."

We're honored to cultivate healing and understanding through the voices of Sarabande Writing Labs. Pamela was living at Hotel Louisville, a downtown homeless shelter, when she participated in the Sarabande Writing Labs program in spring 2014. She is now enrolled in Simmons College of Kentucky and working as a housekeeping supervisor at Hotel Louisville.

“I have gone from a dramatic stage of hopelessness to being a productive member of society,” Pamela says in the article. “My life is going forward.”

We're endlessly proud of Pamela and all the remarkable women who share their writing through Sarabande Writing Labs.
