Paula Bohince - Incident at the Edge of Bayonet Woods

Creative Writing Exercises

1. In the poem “Cleaning My Father’s House,” an entire life is examined via possessions. Write a poem that uses possessions to reveal the personality of their owner. What might we learn about someone simply by listing the contents of a junk drawer, refrigerator, glove compartment, wallet, or backpack?

2. Several poems in the book are written as acrostics. Choose any word or phrase, write it vertically down the left side of a page, and then “fill in” the content of the poem using this word or phrase as both a subject and guide.
